There have been videos circulating on the net for the last few years showing people how to use a coat hanger to break into a garage in just 6 seconds once you get good at it.
They use a coat hanger to go over the top of the garage door and then use it to activate the emergency release that all newer garage door openers have as a safety feature in case someone or something is pinned under the door or if power goes out or the opener just fails altogether. You can see it done below.
How to secure your garage door
- It is surprisingly easy to do this. One is lock the door that goes from your garage into your home. That is one fix you can do right now and costs you nothing.
- The tip above is great for stopping criminals from coming into your home but how do you stop them from getting into your garage? Easy, a properly installed and maintained garage door will remove the “play” in the door that allows them to have the wiggle room to maneuver the coat hanger over to the emergency release.
- Another thing besides getting the play out of the door is you can remove the handle from the release forcing them to try and grab the latch itself which will be tougher especially if you don’t have windows in your garage door.
- Lastly here is another layer of security you can add to your garage door now that you have removed the handle that hangs down and got your door adjusted properly, that is a simple tie wrap. You can tie wrap the release mechanism itself so that it can be broke in order to release the latch in an emergency but cannot be broken by a coat hanger.
It is a horrible feeling to be violated by some criminal invading your home even if it just stays the garage, still a bad feeling. Take a little time to address the issues now and you may be able to avoid that bad feeling I spoke of, altogether.
